What is Pilates?

Pilates is a physical movement program developed by German-born Joseph Pilates

In the early 1920s Joseph and Clara brought their exercise system,

originally performed on the mat and called Contrology, "the art of control", to New York City. Pilates is designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Developed as a rehabilitation technique, Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise program which dramatically transforms the way the body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength, without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body.

Pilates (pronounced "Pi-lah-teez") is not a new form of exercise; it was developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates who was a pioneer in the world of mind-body fitness combining resistance training, stretching, full body movements, breath control, and mental focus into an exercise system that creates a strong, supple and empowered body.

At Lifetree Pilates, owned and operated by April Walker, we offer one-on-one and small group Pilates sessions on the mat and apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates. In our clean and spacious studio, we are proud to train exclusively on Balanced Body Pilates equipment.
